Six Tips for a Great-Looking Summertime Kitchen and Dining Room

With temperatures climbing, snow and ice all but disappearing from weather reports, and more sunny days on the horizon, you might be thinking about revamping your home’s décor scheme. Whether that means changing the paint colors on the wall, moving around the furniture, or something else to you, we’ve got some tips for how you can give your kitchen and dining room a facelift.

 1) Do a Deep Clean

The first step toward making your kitchen and dining room warm-weather ready is deep-cleaning it. Scrub the cabinets, floors, and walls, and throw out any stray knick-knacks or clutter. Reorganize your spice cabinet and make sure all of your glassware and silverware is in its right place. While it may seem like it’s a frivolous step, starting with a literally clean slate is a great way to find inspiration for what you want to change about the space.

 2) Add Some Plants or a Fruit Bowl

Another fairly simple tip, setting out a few houseplants or a fruit bowl is an easy way to add a pop of color to your kitchen or dining room. If you don’t have a green thumb or are worried about the fruit going bad, you can also choose fake plants and wax fruit for a similar look without the hassle.

 3) Set a Colorful Table

Whether this means new tablecloths or new dishes (or both) is up to you. Choose lively prints or bright shades for your table linen, or consider adding a contrasting table runner. You can also spruce up the table settings with coordinating napkins or place mats. You can also set up a rotation of a few different table cloths that you switch between, or purchase ones that complement the rest of your home’s décor.

 4) Paint an Accent Wall or Trim

For a fresh look, painting an accent wall (or revamping the entire room’s paint) can be a game-changer. Whether you want to make the rest of the room pop and have the paint be a bright, crisp white, or you’re bored with neutrals and are ready for something on-trend and unique, a fresh coat of paint can really breathe new life into a room.

 5) Experiment with New Lighting

Adding paper lanterns, new light fixtures, or even colored light bulbs can spruce up your drab kitchen and dining room. Track lighting is a bit of work, but can make an outdated kitchen look much more modern. If you have overhead lighting and want to keep it, you can get a new light fixture cover that better suits the style you are trying to achieve in the room.

 6) Reupholster Your Dining Chairs or Paint Chairs

Another relatively easy project that can dramatically change the look of a room is by updating the fabric on upholstered kitchen chairs. You can match the fabric to your tablecloths and other colors in the room, or branch out completely and choose something that’s a stark contrast. If you don’t have upholstered chairs, you can paint wooden chairs for a new look, as well. Just make sure you do so in a well-ventilated area.
