Give a new look to your backyard space

Is your backyard clutterd? Do you rarely spend time there? Is it lacking space for entertaining or recreation? With good planning, design and construction, your backyard space can become a multipurpose area for relaxing, entertaining and playing. You can do it all by yourself. With some good ideas and a bit of effort you can make your backyard both useful and beautiful. When properly landscaped, a backyard will provide additional outdoor living space where you can spend time with family and friends.

Backyards have become areas for recreation as well as relaxation. When planning decoration of your outdoor space, first you should consider the needs of your household. Before making any major decisions, you should think carefully how you and others will use the space. What do you want out of the yard — a playground for kids, a cozy retreat, and an entertaining patio?

The most important thing you should do is to store all the unnecessary stuff that make the space look overcrowded. If you don't have a shed or a garage, great idea could be buying a second hand shipping container. Shipping containers are useful storage places and an eco way of using up a resource. If you believe that "big metal box" would make the area look ugly, don’t forget that you can modify them if needed. Buying the container is giving you an empty canvas to work with. You can repaint them, install windows and set different shelves and cabinets inside.

If you want to use your outdoor space as a place to entertain guests, first thing you’ll need is outdoor furniture.  Outdoor dining tables, chairs and accessories make for a warm and inviting area. For your yard to look even cozier, you can decorate your outdoor benches with cushions and pillows covered in vibrant outdoor fabric. To maximize the use of space you should consider purchasing storage benches in which you can dispose smaller items that you use outside. If you are planning to have guests or just to spend some quality family time while eating some delicious food, an outdoor kitchen could be the right thing for you.

Outdoor kitchens offer several advantages over their indoor counterparts, including being able to cook at much higher temperatures. Outdoor kitchen should be equipped with grill, sink and cabinets. If you are not a fan of open air kitchens, here is one more thing for which you can use a shipping container. With some modifications, you can create space where you can enjoy preparation of wonderful food.

To enjoy your backyard getaway you should create a relaxing oasis. You can start with making a flagstone path. A path can define a new planting area or the perfect spot for a fountain, arbor or bench. Fill your garden with nectar-rich flowering plants, and if that is too much maintenance for you, you can create an instant garden using containers of flowers in all different shapes, sizes, and colors that make perfect antidote to a colorless, flowerless garden.

As a focal point of the yard, use fountains, fireplaces, or fire pits. You can also accessorize your outdoor rooms with garden statuary, weatherproof art (such as plates, garden plaques, or decorative wrought iron). These touches will turn an ordinary patio or deck into a welcoming, personal space for outdoor living.

To add a more useful purpose of having an outdoor space you can use a small part of it to plant a vegetable garden for the needs of your household.
