Central Air Conditioning Cleaning Tips

One of the most important investments of large homes, central air conditioning units are becoming more and more commonplace. Homeowners can really benefit from using one, as it will be much more efficient than its other counterparts. If you do ignore it for too long however and you fail to give it proper maintenance, then you will only end up with dusty air and vents clogged with dust and debris. You need to make sure you do some cleaning once in a while to make sure it runs in top condition, since this will help you protect your investment and keep your home warm or cool when you need it. You will not need any specialized tools, but you could set aside some time to get it done. Central AC has two main components, an indoor and outdoor parts that need to be cleaned separately. The outdoor unit however holds what really needs attention, so we will cover what you have to do to make that happen:

Disconnect the AC from the power grid, either through its shutoff box near the unit outside or by simply shutting down the power from the main box with the circuit breaker.

Up next comes the removal of the outer case of the unit, exposing the fins inside so you can work on cleaning them. You will need to remove the screws to the case so you can reach them however.

Use a bristle brush to clean each of the fins as you work. You may want to get a rag as well to dust them off if you haven't had the chance to clean them in a while.

You have to remove the outside unit's grille as well, unscrewing its screws as you work. The fan under it will also need to be cleaned.

Vacuum everything inside the unit, removing debris, twigs, leaves, dirt and dust of all kinds that may have ended up there. Make sure you get the job done well since you won't be opening it for a while once you're done.

Turn off the power to the furnace if you clean the indoor unit as well. Open the blower compartment of the unit, then clean everything inside. Use a cleaning solution of bleach and water to sanitize the unit if you need to, especially the condensation drain if you've had issues with algae.

Turn the power back on when you're done and you'll be ready to run it just like new. Overall it takes very little effort to get things done and you don't really have to worry about much if you do this every so often, such as once every six months.
