As one of the only three North African countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco is a marvel of cultural and historical splendor. From rich Arabian folklore drowned in romance to beautiful and colorful textiles, looming arches amidst classical European architecture adorned with intricate Islamic detailing, Morocco is Fusion at its epitome.
And it is for this reason that the Moroccan style makes for impeccable and unmatchable interior décor still popular against the growing trend towards more simplistic and sophisticated interiors.
Traditional Moroccan rugs are a fabulous way of adding a bit of Moroccan luxe into your space. The rich color palette, beautiful motifs and of course the added handmade value tag are key elements that bring in a sense of warmth and comfort to balance out the perceived cold and edgy ambiance of modern décor. We’re not denouncing the modern sensibilities of the 21st century but a bit of the old world charm just makes for something a lot more savory.
Furnishing fabrics are the highlight of any space that justifies the richness of Moroccan décor to its truest. Intricate arabesques, floral, geometric and Islamic motifs spread on a canvas of plush satins and silks in exuberant hues upholstered on furniture or falling gracefully down the walls from the roof covering windows create the prefect space to escape into an Arabian fairytale full of robbers, harrems and romance. Unfortunately, most modern interpretations of interior décor are anything but that. Textures are simpler colors are more neutral and the volume is generally kept very minimalistic.Moroccan windows mounted in carved arches leave one short of breath. You generally don’t get to see them more often in modern construction though. It’s a tragedy that curtains are now being replaced by vertical, horizontal and roller blinds with paint. Though overly decorative Roman blinds can be just the right substitute to replace curtains; they generally tend to be more traditionally inspired and almost always look incomplete without a well adorned pelmet.
What is also signature of Morocco’s rich cultural heritage are its handicrafts. Colorful vases with a language of their own painted on them, carved wooden chests with metal inlay and handmade tapestries as wall hangings are only a few of the country’s shining jewels. If you’re one of those who’s not too keen on loud interiors but still want that hint of Moroccan flavor in your space, these are the perfect decorative ornaments to add those accents to your interior other than playing with color as a solid element. And if you’re feeling a bit extra frisky, throw in a sheesha!
