DIY Wood Furniture Refinishing

Over time, your wood furniture will most likely see some damage. While it is not guaranteed, chances are your table has chipped or damaged wood. To repair and refinish the wood piece, some might choose to strip the wood, despite the lengthy process and overall messiness. There are many ways to restore your wood furniture back to its original splendor without using the stripping process. Below are a few alternatives.

Do A Cleanse: A simple start to any sort of furniture renewal process is to clean and wash your piece. Removing any remaining layers of dust, dirt, debris, and overall buildup of grime can restore a sense of originality within your piece. Use the recommended mild cleansers or detergents. Be sure to read all instructions carefully prior to cleaning your wood furniture.

Use Mineral Spirits: First, you will want to obtain mineral spirits, a transparent liquid used in furniture painting and staining, and wipe down the wood piece with a cloth. Mineral spirits will reveal what your wood furniture piece will look like at the end of the process. If it looks okay, proceed to clean your piece and apply an oil finish. If it fails to be aesthetically pleasing, then other measures must be taken to restore your piece.

Repair White Rings:  White rings occur as a result of moisture left over from cold beverages left out on wood piece. These rings can be avoided by utilizing a coaster set or not placing cold beverages directly down on the table’s surface. Should white rings appear, the problem is simple enough to fix. Use petroleum jelly, slather it on the ring, and let it sit overnight. Wipe clean the next morning to reveal a refreshed and ring-free wood surface.

Fill In With Epoxy: To replace any chipped, damaged, or missing wood on your furniture, you will want to fill it in with epoxy putty. Wait for a few hours and let it harden. The final product comes out to be around the same density of wood with a lighter tone to it. Fortunately, when the epoxy is stained or colored, it gives off the same feel as wood and blends right in.

Apply A Finish: If you use the epoxy putty method, you will need to apply a coat of finish. Once the epoxy is completely dried, any imperfections can be sanded and stained out. Paint on a gel stain to match the color of the existing wood. Be sure that the overall color of the piece and the color of the gel stain are similar so that the patch work blends seamlessly.

Remember, there are alternatives to avoid having to completely strip your wood furniture. Stripping can be time consuming and messy, and often the results turn out to be rather lackluster. You are better off repairing and refinishing using another method. For more information on wood furniture refinishing, contact the friendly staff at Jaron’s Furniture Outlet.
